AI Sub Hub Book Club: What Does AI Mean for Our Humanity? w/ Tammy Hawkins – AI Enthusiasts Sub-Hub
In May 2026, Pope Leo XIV released his first major document as Pope, an encyclical called Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”), devoted entirely to artificial intelligence and what it means for the future of humanity. At 42,000 words it is a substantial piece of writing, but at its core it asks questions every business owner and human being is already sitting with: Who controls AI? Who benefits from it? What do we lose if we let it make our decisions for us? For this session we are approaching the text not from a religious standpoint but from a philosophical one, using it as a lens to explore the ethics of AI, the concentration of power, and what it means to stay authentically human in a rapidly automating world. We will be reading the Introduction and Chapters Three and Four (and Chapter Five if you have extra time), which cover technology and human dignity, the practical safeguards we need as a society, and the question of whether AI unifies or fragments us.
